 Edith Cowan University is looking for a suitably qualified academic leader as its Deputy for its renowned Centre for Indigenous Education and Research, Kurongkurl Katitjin. 

It is intended that the suitable candidate will successfully shadow and transition fully to the Head of Centre role by 2019.

 By attracting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to ECU, this challenging and rewarding role will improve participation, retention and graduation outcomes, while strengthening Kurongkurl Katitjin’s capability for teaching and research in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture across the University.

 As Deputy Head of Kurongkurl Katitjin, you will:

 • Lead and advise on strategies to increase Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participation and support success across the diverse disciplines at ECU;

• Enhance local, regional and national relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the wider community to improve education outcomes;

• Establish strong and lasting industry links that enhance teaching and research programs; and 

• Provide innovative leadership and guidance in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture across teaching, research and engagement.

 You will be an Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person as provided for under the Equal Opportunity Act (WA) 1984, Section 50D, with a strong motivation and relevant background to make a difference in Aboriginal education, affairs and the broader community.

 Puutu Kunti Kurrama and Pinikura Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC

INAUGURAL CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

In September 2015, the Puutu Kunti Kurrama and Pinikura peoples celebrated their Native Title Determination. The PKKPAC RNTBC was established to protect the rights and interests of their peoples who have traditional rights to lands and waters that cover approximately 10,888 square kilometres of Western Australia’s Pilbara region, between Onslow and Tom Price. Subsequently the establishment and governance framework for the Corporation has been put in place and the board is now pleased to invite applications for the position of its inaugural Chief Executive Officer. 

Key accountabilities of the position will include:

  • Implementation of the Community Strategic Plan and Operational Plan developed as part of the establishment framework;
  • Strategic planning and Annual plan development in consultation with the Board and wider PKKP community; 
  • Develop and lead a small but focussed team, creating a constructive, collaborative and innovative environment;
  • Ensure compliance with the range of Native Title, Statutory, Legal, financial and contractual obligations; 
  • Ensuring that the PKKP peoples’ culture and heritage are recorded, protected and shared in the community, and becomes embedded in the best practice systems of the Corporation; 
  • Providing advice to the Board of Directors on strategic positioning, governance best practice and economic development opportunities.

People interested in considering this position should offer extensive senior level experience in a leadership role, one that has included multiple and diverse responsibilities.  Intending applicants must offer outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, with a strong ability to effectively engage with the PKKP people and other key stakeholders.  Strategic, operational, financial, people management and sound decision making skills are all essential.  

The person appointed must bring a very good understanding of working with indigenous communities. Aboriginal people are encouraged to apply.

Intending applicants should be aware that the position is based in Karratha, however periodic travel to Perth as well as remote communities in the Pilbara will be necessary.  This position is not considered to be fly in fly out.

As the Native Title holder, the Ngarluma Aboriginal Corporation has primary responsibility to deal with mining, development and heritage applications from a variety of proponents.  The successful applicant will ensure that the rights of the Ngarluma people are protected and suitable compensation acquired.

  • Karratha based
  • 2-year contract, with possibility of extension
  • Salary package of $140,000 including superannuation, to be negotiated
  • A current legal practicing certificate to practice law in Western Australia.

As a member of the Senior Management Team the Lawyer is responsible for advising the Ngarluma Aboriginal Corporation (NAC) on a range of legal issues relevant to its operations to ensure compliance and accountability.

The role will have responsibility to monitor best practice and due diligence with all commercial activities, including contracts and engagement of consultants.

The position will also have an ongoing responsibility to ensure best practice governance processes are maintained within the organisation including regular update of ASIC and ORIC requirements, contemporary rulings and interpretation of internal rule books.

Where required the role will have responsibility to brief external legal services to ensure precise and timely response to matters on hand.

The occupant of the role will be required to undertake occasional intra and interstate travel, including to remote locations that will involve basic camping and travel in light aircraft and helicopters.

Kununurra Region Economic Aboriginal Corporation (KREAC)

Nominations for Independent Directors

KREAC’s object is to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Kununurra region through social and economic development. KREAC aims to facilitate the delivery of employment programs and opportunities and to support education, job training, health service, work and housing for its members.

In 2017, KREAC aims to undertake a strategic planning process and identify options for its future development.

Board Composition and Term

The Board of KREAC comprises of up to 12 directors. Currently, KREAC does not have any independent directors. In the future, KREAC will be required to have at least 2 independent directors. Directors are appointed for 2 year terms. The independent directors will be appointed at the KREAC annual general meeting in November 2016.

Desired Skills

Preferred nominees will have skills in financial management, corporate governance, strategic planning, community services or be able to demonstrate strong business acumen.

Board meetings

The KREAC Board meetings approximately 6 times a year in Kununurra.

BTAC is the registered native title body corporate for the Thalanyji People, based in the West Pilbara.
